Day 2 in China

Today we woke up and enjoyed the huge international breakfast buffet again, and then headed out with the group to tour Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.  All four of us are sleeping well and don’t seem as jet lagged as some of the other families,  probably due to the fact that we arrived in Beijing late at night and were ready to go to bed when everyone else in China was going to bed.  It was much colder and windier today as you will see in the pictures below, we pulled out the gloves and earmuffs and all of that.  We were outside for two and a half hours, walking through the Forbidden City.  It was educational and interesting, but I think we all preferred the Great Wall to what we saw today.  A few of the highlights were watching the guards in Tiananmen Square (apparently when on duty they have to stand still like a statue for three straight hours) and seeing several huge chunks of the wall blow off and crash to the ground in the Forbidden City due to the extreme wind.  Oh, and my mom saw the most attractive Chinese man that she’s ever seen who she said reminded her of Elvis.  J  Somehow I missed it.

After this tour we headed out for another lunch at a Chinese restaurant.  I think the restaurants here all have round tables with a glass turntable in the middle so they place all of the food on it and you spin it around to get what you want.  The kids are enjoying it for sure, but they are not loving the food.  There are several little kids in our travel group who are all so cute and are holding up better than some of the adults even!  We then ended our day at the Silk Factory where we saw how silk is spun and all of the preparation behind it which was totally new to me.   I bought Natalie a beautiful blue silk dress and can’t wait to put it on her and take pictures in a few days!

Tonight I was dying for a Diet Coke so we walked to McDonald’s from the hotel and ate dinner.  To all of my friends who know what a Diet Coke fan I am, that is what I am missing the most from home!  My daily fountain drinks.  What I have had is just not the same here.  So now we are packing our suitcases up again after less than 48 hours in Beijing and getting ready for our morning flight out to Hangzhou.  One couple is traveling there with us because their daughter is in the same province, but we won’t see any of the other couples until we all arrive in Guangzhou in about a week.

Beijing has been awesome, we have all loved it but are ready to get on with it and meet our little daughter!  About a day and a half to go!
